reading

school is officially here. the eldest of the wee finches started yesterday to second grade. i still don't feel old enough to have a second grader. when she got home from school, she had the customary paperwork that needed to be filled out and sent back. being the good mom that i am i filled it all out and sent it back with her today. while reading a note from her teacher that had listed some of her goals for the students reading, i saw that they were going to be doing chapter books. the eldest of wee finches has tons of books, but alas no chapter books. we made a trip to town after school to purchase some that come highly recommended by pattylicious. we purchased the first five of the magic tree house books. by the time the eldest of the wee ones went to bed she had read the first two and half of the third book. now this might not seem like a huge accomplishment to some, but that is around 160 pages in about an hour and a half. that is quite impressive to me. she is loving the books, so it looks like tomorrow i will be purchasing some more of the books. if anyone has a suggestion about other books for a second grader let me know.

Awesome!!! Adeline is trudging her way through Charlotte's Web. Mostly we go to the library and I let her pick what looks good to her, as long as it is appropriate. I also never discourage her, such as "Are you sure you want that one? It's kinda long!" I also saw a tip at the library in the kids section. It told the child to find a book open to a page and count how many words they don't know. One word- too easy. Two or Three words - a good pick. Four words-challenging. Five words - pick a new book. Just a few thoughts. :)

Also, books that she can watch a movie as reward at the end may be good. Make it a family movie party or something. :)

WOW!!! Leah has great ideas! I was going to suggest Charlotte's Web and Mrs. Piggle Wiggle's Magic. Also Snot Stew. I have all of these and more. Come to the Library O' Patricia and we'll get her some good stuff. I think that I have alot that she would like. I like the tip about the words per page. Hit me up on Friday if you want to check it out.

I loved Mrs. Piggle Wiggle! I have the box set. Adeline hasn't gotten interested yet. I also loved Snot Stew. I had completely forgotten about him. I also liked Ramona by Beverly Cleary. I found a website for her: http://www.beverlycleary.com/index.html

I found this quote about Ramona:

In the Quimby's house, Ramona and her older sister Beezus share a room, but on a day when everything goes wrong, Ramona wants the room all to herself. She wants to be wicked and beat her heels on the wall.

Bang! Bang! Bang! That noise ought to make everybody good and mad. "Mean, mean, mean!" she yelled, in time to her drumming heels. She wanted to make her whole family feel as angry as she felt. "Mean, mean, mean!" She was glad her heels left marks on the wallpaper. Glad! Glad! Glad!

Why did she have to get into so much trouble? Anyone who knows Ramona knows that she never tries to be a pest. Ramona just had to boing her classmate Susan's thick, springy curls one last time.

Sound like anyone you know?
That's why I enjoyed her so. She's so rebellious!!!

Ramona! Fabulous! I am so glad someone else enjoyed Mrs. Piggle Wiggle besides me. I think I am going to have to read my kids books again.
